Calculate a Diversity Index for NYC District 3

We recently posted How to Calculate a Diversity Index and suggested this could be used to look at how well mixed schools within a school district were, among other uses. Somewhat on cue, there was a major controversy in New York City’s Upper West Side, as parents debated a plan to allocate middle school seats to lower income students.  https://twitter.com/DOEChancellor/status/989728932772499457

This is a very complicated issue (that we won’t touch directly), but our curiosity led us to apply our Diversity Index calculator spreadsheet to the elementary and middle schools in District 3. Somewhat surprisingly, District 3’s Elementary (60.1) and Middle (62.6) schools scored slightly higher than San Francisco (elementary, 59.5), and a little lower than Los Angeles (elementary, 68.8) on our diversity index.
